The Amazon-Andes

The 350 indigenous groups and 60 isolated tribes of the Amazon, comprising a population of over 30 million people, are its true stewards and land defenders. Their way of life has safeguarded the Amazon for thousands of years, and yet they are rarely consulted by top down conservation groups and funders who lack a connection to the complexity of the ground. This is why huge funds are announced for the Amazon-Andes region, but nothing changes and things are actually getting worse.

Our Approach:

Cloud Forest Fund is working with local communities and NGOs on surveillance of loggers, creation of biocultural territorialities, and fostering of resilient livelihoods for indigenous communities in the Ucayali and Pui Pui regions, at the Peru-Brazil border, highly threatened places that harbor the last ‘no contact’ communities of the Amazon. At stake is millions of hectares. Cloud Forest Fund is giving small support to NGOs and indigenous federations to craft strategies for keeping these areas free of illegal roads, mining and industrial palm oil.
