Meso-America

Meso-America, which stretches from Mexico to Colombia is the world’s 3rd largest biodiversity hotspot. The five largest intact forests in Mesoamerica have been stewarded by indigenous communities for thousands of years. They are the Maya Forest of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, the Moskitia in Nicaragua and Honduras, the Indio Maíz-Tortuguero in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the Talamanca mountains of Costa Rica and Panama, and the Darien Gap which connects Panama and Colombia.

Our Approach:

Cloud Forest Fund is supporting the Wounaan community’s efforts which extend to the Darien. It hopes to continue to support indigenous struggles in these 5 intact forests to safeguard land as per their traditional territorial managements systems, as well as art, dance, music and culture tied to biodiversity. Cloud Forest Fund will contribute by supporting communities to draft strategies, tell stories and secure funds for their visions to protect the Meso-American forests.

Our Support:

Grant to Native Future to support their work on land rights and birding for the Wounaan communities in Panama
