Galápagos

The Galápagos Islands, an archipelago of volcanic islands deep in the Pacific Ocean, are named after the word, ‘galápago’ meaning ‘turtle’ - referring to the giant tortoises that live on the islands. Though most of its area is part of Ecuador’s marine protected area system, illegal fishing and dredging continue to harm endemic species found in the surrounding ocean such as marine iguanas, Galápagos green turtles, and Galápagos sea lions. The other major threat comes from invasive plants and feral animals transported to Galápagos, which have harmed the giant tortoise and other unique endemic species of the archipelago.

Our Approach:

Helping the government and local communities shape new strategies for dealing with the invasive species and feral animal issues, and raising the alarm around illegal dredging and fishing through local and global education will be how we support Galápagos.
